“I’m chilling at the top,” Young Thug exults on new song “Cloud 9.” He must’ve been perusing Wondering Sound’s 100 Best Albums of 2014; his Black Portland mixtape with Bloody Jay is on there, and rightly so. The Atlanta rap eccentric also recently appeared alongside Nicki Minaj on impossibly youthful ATL-via-Mississippi duo Rae Sremmurd‘s “Throw Sum Mo.” This one takes frequent collaborator London on Da Track’s strobe-like synths and loping beats and uses them for some Auto-Tune crooning about money, drugs and sex; at one point Young Thug breaks away from singing about touching someone’s body to ask for a lighter and a blunt. It’s less a “victory lap” than an extra-planetary orbit. If there’s really a cloud 9, space must be the place for it.
