Can we talk? Jeezy (né Young Jeezy) is in a curious place right now. The Atlanta MC’s blustery trap-rap, thrilling at its mid-’00s peak even as its raspy ad-libs were too simple for some lyrics-first rap purists, has been eclipsed creatively in recent years by ATLiens with even simpler, but weirder, approaches. One of those is Future, whose gargled Auto-Tune sincerity accompanied the rapper (along with the Roots) last night on Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“Rest in peace, Joan Rivers,” Jeezy began, paying respect to the late comedian before rasping through “No Tears,” his stiff-upper-lip collaboration with the Honest man, from Jeezy’s brand-new album, Seen It All: The Autobiography. The tribute, if somewhat unexpected, at least suited the song’s sadness over fallen friends. But a more serious reason Jeezy’s current phase feels like a passing one is his legal troubles, which are many: He recently was arrested for the third time this year.

The Thug Motivation rapper’s mid-2013 #ItsThaWorld EP, with producer of the hour DJ Mustard, carried with it a sonic adventurousness that hinted at a possible career revitalization. Jeezy keeps up with the news. He doesn’t cry.
