Unlike the Grimes set they reportedly blacklisted and buried, the party Boiler Room threw for Hudson Mohawke’s new EP (Chimes, out September 30 through Warp) was so major it’s been shared in stages. First there was the carbonated pop of Sophie and QT, then there was an hour-long entry from HudMo’s production partner Lunice, and now we’ve got the main event, featuring guest appearances by Flying Lotus’ alter ego (Captain Murphy), a rather ripped Busta Rhymes, and visual distractions like a few life-sized monsters (designed by Trish Hunter, best known for Björk’s “Wanderlust” video) and subtle allusions to Kabuki theatre and samurais.
Watch it all unfold down below. As for when we can expect Hudson Mohawke’s first album in five years, he recently told the FADER, “[I'm] diving in and out of various projects, but I’m still trying to keep my focus on my own stuff. It’s something I’ve learned from Rick Rubin, just watching him work. I’ve been whittling away at the stuff that I don’t necessarily need to have. There’s a finished record there, but it’s too long for what I want it to be really. So I’m sort of chipping away to get it refined.”
