If you’re a true fan of hip-hop, the name Stones Throw carries some serious weight. Despite being totally independent, the label has influenced the genre in ways even its founder Chris Manak (aka Peanut Butter Wolf) never imagined. With the release of the new documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton (This Is Stones Throw Records), the label is finally receiving the true love and respect it deserves from some of the biggest names in the industry.
Since 1996, from their East L.A. base, Stones Throw Records has released a plethora of instant classics under the radar of the mainstream. Artists such as J.Dilla, Madlib and DOOM have all called Stones Throw their home. It’s taken some time, but after years of influencing a whole new generation of artists such as Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, the label is now getting more attention than ever.
Directed by Jeff Broadway, Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton tracks Chris Manak’s dramatic journey through his musical career as DJ, producer and independent label-ower. It’s a must-see for hip-hop fans.
Below check out the first five minutes, featuring Talib Kweli, A-Trak, Questlove, Common and Kanye West.
