Watch Arcade Fire’s “We Exist” Video, Starring Andrew Garfield

“The right to marry anyone you want is a human rights issue,” Win Butler said as he introduced the Arcade Fire song “We Exist” at Coachella last month. According to the Los Angeles Times, he then compared the massive crowd to the Woodstock generation and told them to take a stand on tough issues.

It was a lot to take in for people who were at Coachella simply to party, but Butler’s statements hinted at the hopeful dialogue beneath the band’s Reflektor album. They make it even more explicit in the official “We Exist” video, which underscores the song’s main theme — a man trying to explain to his father that he’s gay — with shots of Andrew Garfield in drag, trying to feel comfortable in his own skin at a local bar and (thanks to a magic portal and couple older guys in cut-off shorts) Coachella…
