Recorded live during downtime at this year’s Americana Music Festival, “Simple Man,” from the Lancaster, PA, group the Stray Birds, is the perfect showcase for the band’s virtues. The song has the feel of a way-out-west campfire ballad: ambling acoustic guitar, walking bass and swaying violin, but the highlight comes when all three members — Maya de Vitry, Oliver Craven, and Charlie Muench — lean in toward the microphone and harmonize together on the song’s moving, understated chorus. As the song progresses and the darkness sets in, those harmonies begin to feel like warm reassurance.
