Some musicians feel they have a divine calling, but when Stone Jack Jones spoke with Stephen Deusner for Wondering Sound last year, his approach to his music was much more matter-of-fact: I got married as a teenager and moved to Boston, and I kept thinking, “What am I going to do with my life?” I’d sit down and play guitar, then I’d think, “What am I gonna do?” I’d stare out the window, play guitar, and think, “What the fuck am I going to do with my life?” My wife at the time finally said, “Why don’t you just play guitar?” Oh, OK.”

From such straightforward beginnings comes music full of fog and shadow. Jones’s Ancestor is one of the year’s most engrossing records. Its songs are eerie and creaking, full of strange figures, low light and dark implications. They’re country music ghost stories, bare, rickety and moaning. The video for “Good Enough” is the perfect companion to Jones’s music: images either blurry or glimpsed only in snatches. It’s beautiful and dreamlike, an elegy delivered in hushed tones.
