In his interview with Stacey Anderson for Wondering Sound, Dirty Projectors’ Nat Baldwin talked about how important the comforts of home were to the creation of his solo record, In The Hollows. But there’s nothing comfortable about the video for its latest single, “Knockout”: Baldwin appears with his eyes closed, with eerie fake irises painted to the lids. He’s watching a man in a mask perform a series of odd, herky-jerk contortions as his song — a marvelously tense combination of sawing upright bass and Baldwin’s fluttering voice — twitches and groans underneath. As the video goes on, we see more people — all of them with fake eyes painted on their eyelids — watching the man dance. The audience, creepily, remains motionless. The dancer is eventually joined by a woman, and the tension slowly mounts as the video moves to its eerie, oblique ending.
