Anyone familiar with the previous work of Midnight Faces co-founder Matt Doty, as part of Saxon Shore, will no doubt be surprised by the relentless tunefulness of his new project with Philip Stancil, Midnight Faces. Where Saxon Shore wrote swooping instrumental songs that capitalized on dramatic dynamics, on “Over Again,” the band crafts a rollicking, danceable pop song that wouldn’t sound out of place on a late period New Order record. The guitars are tense as telephone wires, and allows Stancil’s aching voice to provide the drama. The video, in stark black-and-white, echoes the song’s tone. Cross-cutting between high-speed shots of city life and slower, contemplative views of the people who live therein, it’s the perfect reflection of a song that feels epic and personal all at once.
