The figures that appear in the video for Live Island’s “King,” (directed by the artist Robert Beatty) are digital ghosts — flickering silhouettes of pink static that spiral alongside a floating television screen displaying images of what looks like a Pong game shorting out. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Live Island’s chilly, minimal synthpop, where neon-blue streaks of sound glide alongside baleful, detached vocals. There are elements of the pioneersof the sound — the Normal, sadder Gary Numan — but what it sounds more like are niche minimal wave acts, like Absolute Body Control. It’s an eerie, moody masterpiece.
