In the video for “Wizard of the Eye,” Philadelphia’s Busses perform at night, around a campfire, in the middle of an open field. It’s a deceptively tranquil setting for a song that bludgeons so mercilessly and effectively. As the screen flashes blue then red then yellow, the band blasts out riff after pummeling riff, each of them hitting with the weight and velocity of a medicine ball. It’s not all raw power, though — the group’s screeching guitars are tempered with glorious, divebombing vocal melodies, taking the ballast of stoner metal and spiking it with the sweetness of power pop. It’s a head-spinning combination, fury and glory colliding for a stunning result.
Busses will release Wizard of the Eye on February 17.
