The majority of the video for “Guatemala” from Philadelphia’s Amanda X is first-person POV: we go from houses in West Philly to a rushing waterfall to a pug hanging out in a backyard bar. Between each miniature scene are through-the-windshield shots of a car moving down the highway, nothing but empty road ahead. Taken in total, it’s as close to the experience of being on tour as you’re likely to have without joining a band and doing it yourself. The video swings from moments of serenity to moments of celebration, and the song that it accompanies does roughly the same. The band is particularly skilled at pairing razor-wire guitars with swooping, melancholy vocals, and that combination makes “Guatemala” feel almost wistful.
