When it comes time to tally up 2014′s hidden treasures, White Hinterland’s beautiful, genre-testing Baby will be somewhere near the top. Her most fully-realized work to date, on Baby Casey Dienel rebuilds White Hinterland whole cloth, working in pulsing electronics, weird atmospheric textures and floating, ghostly effects, all while keeping the spotlight on her evocative, expressive voice. When she spoke to Katy Henriksen in this fascinating interview for us a few months ago, Dienel said, ‘The voice is the most direct conduit between two people. If you’re across room and I sing to you, I’m using this very human muscle, and you can also do it right back to me…Singing is like being an actress. You’re an interpreter. You’re carrying all the emotional information of the song. Whether you wrote the song or not, you’re doing a lot of heavy lifting.”
And lift it does, in this riveting live performance of Baby‘s title track, recorded at the Columbus Theatre in Providence, RI, directed by Peter Glantz and produced by the Columbus Cooperative and The Imaginary Company. Backed only by piano, Dienel glides and swoops across the song, confidently navigating its corners and peaks.
