In some unsettling news out of Austin early this morning, as editor in chief J. Edward Keyes touched on in his Day 2 recap, a drunk driver running from police crashed his automobile into a crowd at the SXSW festival, killing two people and injuring 23 others.

Earlier today, Art Acevedo, chief of the Austin Police Department, confirmed that a man and woman were killed by an erratic driver while riding their motor scooters outside of the music venue the Mohawk at 9th Street and Red River. A few of the others hospitalized had multiple internal injuries.

“We owe it to the victims and their families to gather the evidence we need to bring them justice.” said Chief Acevedo. According to Acevedo, the man was driving the wrong direction on a one-way street before the incident.

A suspect is in custody and faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault by vehicle.
