One of Trent Reznor‘s first movie projects is arriving on wax. In recent years, the Nine Inch Nails leader has worked with Atticus Ross on full-fledged scores for Gone GirlThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and, for their once-improbable Oscar, The Social Network. In 1994, when Reznor was just getting started in film work, NIN’s cover of Joy Division’s “Dead Souls” appeared on The Crow soundtrack. And he oversaw a soundtrack for Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers that took the film’s disorienting qualities to another level.

Now, vinyl-only reissue label Music on Vinyl is set to re-release Reznor’s Natural Born Killers soundtrack on December 8, as Exclaim points out. The pressing will be on 180-gram vinyl with a gatefold sleeve, and the first 2000 numbered copies will be available on “blood red” vinyl. Though the album has sold more than 500,000 copies in the United States, it was originally released only on CD and cassette; according to Discogs, the only previous vinyl edition was a 500-run British pressing by the Simply Vinyl label, in 1999.

The soundtrack was unusual for how it mixes snatches of dialogue and sound from the film along with an eclectic tracklist that spans Leonard Cohen, Patsy Cline and Dr. Dre. There are also three Nine Inch Nails songs, including one, “Burn,” written specifically for the film. Reznor told MTV at the time that he suggested Stone “try to turn the soundtrack into a collage-of-sound, kind of the way the movie used music: make edits, add dialogue and make it something interesting, rather than a bunch of previously released music.”

After Natural Born Killers, Reznor went on to produce the soundtrack for David Lynch’s 1997 film Lost Highway. The seeds were sown for the man who had told MTV that “I’m not real keen on using my music in films” to one day have a burgeoning second career in movie music.
