The decades-old artistic conversation between Tori Amos and Trent Reznor just took a goosebump-inducing turn. The piano-playing singer/songwriter recently released a new album, Unrepentant Geraldines, which — as our reviewer Katherine St. Asaph notes — goes forward by going backward. She and the Nine Inch Nails leader were close in the ’90s, with Reznor contributing vocals to her 1994 album, Under the Pink. Amos has also been known to sing a bit of NIN’s famously Johnny Cash-covered classic “Hurt” at her live shows. Last night at a concert in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio (where Reznor started making music under his best-known band name), Amos sang NIN’s gut-wrenching “Something I Could Never Have,” from 1989′s Pretty Hate Machine, backing herself only on the keys. It’s powerfully intense, and it’s a thing you can watch below. (h/t Annie Zaleski)
