It’s official: Thurston Moore is back. The Sonic Youth singer/guitarist will release his new solo album The Best Day on October 21 via Matador Records (you can pre-order via iTunes, Amazon or the label).

The title track, which you can hear below, also heralds a return of sorts, leaning toward brawny intensity after 2011′s low-key, Beck-produced Demolished Thoughts. “And here’s a man with a lust for life / He lives for now on the edge of a knife / And you know he doesn’t like to be cut,” Moore sings in his familiar deadpan.

According to Matador, The Best Day includes Moore’s “signature thrashing electric guitars as well as blissful 12-string acoustic ballads.” He’s backed by guitarist James Sedwards (Nought), bassist Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) and drummer Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth). They’re also going on tour with him, accompanied for several dates by Sebadoh.
