The Bug Reunites With Grouper’s Liz Harris on “Black Wasp” Ahead of ‘Exit’ EP

Shape-shifting electronic-music producer Kevin Martin, aka the Bug, has once again crossed paths with shapelessness-mastering self-recorder Liz Harris. London-based Martin last enlisted the Oregon-based Grouper mainstay earlier this year on Angels & Devils, an album that, per our reviewer Andy Battaglia, “plays spiritedly with heavenly and hellish poles, outdoing Death Grips in rawness and seething rage.” The Bug’s upcoming Exit EP, due out October 7 via Ninja Tune, reprises the pair’s Angels & Devils collaboration,  the spectral “Void,” and adds what a press release describes as a “spaced out and dubbed out version” that is “even deeper/headier.”

The Exit EP also includes a second Harris-Martin collaboration, “Black Wasp,” along with its own alternate version. This one comes from the same sessions as the “Void,” and its pairing of Cocteau Twins-like gauziness and monstrous bass descends into its own vast, shadowy space — one that mesmerizingly matches the elegance and menace contained in the song’s title. It buzzes round and round, and it’ll only sting a little.

Separately, Grouper has a new album called Ruins on the way on October 31 via Kranky. Listen to “Black Wasp” below; scroll down for the Bug’s Exit EP cover art, tracklist and tour dates.
