Sylvan Esso, the moody dance-pop project from Mountain Man‘s Amelia Meath and Megafaun‘s Nick Sanborn, is suited for bigger stages than either of those indie-folk bands. Last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the North Carolina duo confidently eased into spotlight as if it was theirs along. It probably didn’t hurt to have the ever-reassuring presence of the Roots’ Questlove behind them on drums. Also helping, no doubt, was their choice of song, their 2014 self-titled debut album’s slinky and impressionistic “Coffee” (watch a video here): As Meath previously pointed out on Wondering Sound, the song also includes nods to James Brown and “Hanky Panky.” But this was television, and it certainly didn’t hurt that Meath and Sanborn looked comfortable up there swaggering at the mic and head-nodding over electronics, respectively. By the time they reached the xx-like vocal counterpoint toward the end, it was OK that the coffee was “cold.”
