Since 2007, Boston’s Mean Creek have been perfecting their particular brand of brawny power pop, earning a the attention of college rock forerunners like Buffalo Tom (with whom they toured in 2009) and generating both a devoted fanbase and a slowly-growing buzz (this publication named them one of our 14 to Watch in 2014.)
Local Losers, their fourth record, is the full, perfect realization of all of the things the group does well — Chris Keene’s muscular vocals slam up against bruised-knuckle riffs, and the songs manage to be sweet and tuneful without sacrificing any of their black-eyed, split-lip burliness. If Against Me! recorded at Boston’s legendary Fort Apache studio, this is what they’d sound like. In their interview with Annie Zaleski, the band says that the recording of Local Losers was fraught with struggle, but you’d never know it listening to the final product. All that comes through is pure joy.
