Noah Lennox, known to most as Animal Collective’s Panda Bear, started teasing us with hints of a new album way back in February. Now autumn is fast approaching and we’ve still not received a release date for the LP, tentatively titled Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper.
Lennox is playing the long game on this one. While keeping mum on the specific details, he’s continued to test drive new material. (He also used a similar strategy for 2011′s Tomboy.)
On Friday, Lennox released a mixtape, with accompanying trippy visuals, at the URL pbvsgr.com giving a nod to the potential album title. Fader pointed out that there’s brief interludes of new Panda Bear material at the 15- and 28-minute marks.
Today, a bootleg recording of last night’s set at the Mohawk in Austin, Texas was released. The quality is excellent and after playing opener “Last Night at the Jetty,” Lennox segues into new songs at the six-minute mark before drifting back into “You Can Count On Me.”
Now look. I’m not trying to rush Lennox or anything. You can’t push these kinds of creative endeavors. It’s just that Person Pitch is a personal favorite, definitely one of my top albums, and I’m eager for more Panda. A track on Random Access Memories is not enough to tide me over, m’kay? Hopefully the new material will arrive in time to bump something else off my year-end list.
