Though the name might not ring a bell, you’ve probably already heard Yuuki Matthews’ skillful instrumentation without realizing it. Bassist for indie-folk greats The Shins, the California native has come a long way after stints in Seattle bands like Seldom and Crystal Skulls and collaborative work with Sufjan Stevens and David Bazan of Pedro the Lion. Now Matthews is releasing an LP of his own and multi-talented fellow Shins member Richard Swift has remixed minimalist pop track, “Funny Morning.” It starts off slowly, with a backdrop of ethereal synths and faint murmurs of chatter. But when the track hits the halfway mark, a kick drum thumps in and Matthews echoes “morning” like a steady tide washing ashore. “Funny Morning” manages to produce a cluster of noisiness that’s surprisingly soothing.

Yuuki Matthews’ Funny Morning is out September 30th on Flannelgraph Records.
