Well$ is a Charlotte rapper forging his own stylistic lane somewhere between classic boom-bap, Drake and Ca$h Money. His debut mixtape, MTYSD: Revenge of the African Bootyscratcher, hinted at genuine promise, and the music he’s been sharing this week, during the so-called Week of Well$, is the sound of him hungrily delivering on that promise, one bar at a time. On “Stella 95″ he’s rapping with more audible grit and grain in his voice, a slight urgency shading his delivery, over a single pulsating band of synth, unfurling out like night highway under headlights.
