“Charm,” the second single from the LA duo Vow’s forthcoming EP Make Me Yours, is a slow-smolder torch song, a blue valentine where expressions of devotion are delivered with dramatic intensity — it’s love, but it sounds like longing. Frontwoman Julia Blake’s voice is wreathed in smoke, and the purplish synths that surround it only heighten the sense of mystery. But beyond the obvious influences — the melancholy of goth, the soft neon of new wave — there are subtler touchstones. At times, “Charm” sounds like a kind of retro-futurist R&B, Blake’s voice slowly winding through the low-lit synths like a sci-fi nightclub singer delivering a doomy lullaby to the boozy 3 a.m. crowd.
