“Folded Out” starts out as light and speedy as rocks skipped across the surface of a lake. There’s, at first, a single pirouetting guitar figure; then there’s percussion that clacks like horse hoofs on cobblestone. But one minute in, the song hits full bloom: Cody Fitzgerald and Molly Grund’s voices spiral and intertwine, his low and deep, hers high and angelic. It just keeps building: flutes dart like fireflies, strings swoop down — what started modest and pretty becomes mighty and bold and imposing. The song’s structure mirrors the band’s progression, with the 21-year-old Fitzgerald first building the skeletons of the tracks in his bedroom before working with the 20-year-old Grund to add the beautiful, multi-layered vocal harmonies. The end result sparkles and shines.
