Despite the cosmic indicator in its title, the Pine Hill Haints’ latest track hits hard as down-home rather than out of this world. Since 1998 the Alabama quartet has been making self-proclaimed “ghost music” (that is, genres deemed deceased by the mainstream) that transports you to an abandoned post-war plantation. On “Galaxy Buffalo” the Pine Hill Haints play their instruments with reckless abandon, bringing to mind the fervor of fellow Southerner Tim Barry or folk-punk pros Defiance Ohio. Jamie Barrier’s rusty twang is on par with both members of Two Gallants,’ though it gets a little lost in the stirring sea of washboard, banjo, and plucky guitar. “Galaxy Buffalo” is a true bluegrass — emphasis on “blue” — song that gains an upbeat momentum perfectly juxtaposed with Barrier’s haunting refrain of “There’s no escape.”
