Though it’s over and done in under two minutes, “Male Secretary,” from the excellent third record by the Michigan group The People’s Temple still manages to unnerve. Vocalist William Young warbles his way through a surreal narrative while the band bangs gong-like, as if they’re trying to ring in the apocalypse. It’s a good indication of the psyched-out strangeness that occurs throughout Musical Garden, a record feels like it’s populated more with hallucinations than songs. It’s a grand, giddy trip, a great leap forward for one of rock’s most promising young bands.
