As you might guess from the title of this song, Montibus Communitas are not a band prone to frivolity. Their latest album, A Pilgrim to the Absolute, is a 44-minute avant-garde opera about a pilgrim on the journey to enlightenment. That may set off alarm bells — is this some kind of wan, milky New Age music? — but one listen to “The Pilgrim To The Source Of Love And Life” should quell those fears. The song is a hypnotizing four-minute drone built around a steady tribal drum beat and streaked with strange flutes, free-floating ambient tones, handclaps and ringing guitars. The song changes shape slightly — the whoosh quiets to make way for darting pan flute, different textures emerge in the song’s background — but it remains defiantly strange and ghostly throughout, a metaphorical fable told in sound.
