The Toronto outfit Mimico have recently opened for post-industrial grinders Pop.1280 as well as whimsical psychedelic one-man-band White Fence, and their VHS-era synth-pop courses bleakly somewhere between the dead-eyed confrontation of the former and the enervated drugginess of the latter. “Fate Screen” is built on an insectile sine-wave of a synth, the kind that feels like a needle in your eyeball, while guitars so tinny they sound like peeled-back tuna can lids chime in the middle distance. Ben Oginz’ tone-agnostic moan floats up the middle of the track like billowing black smoke.
