Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith may have a background in composition — she’s a Berklee College of Music graduate — but there’s something gloriously haphazard about “Careen.” It’s the aural equivalent of a Jackson Pollock painting, sound appearing in bright spatters rather than long, fluid lines. The prominence of the Buchla 100 synthesizer, as well as Smith’s clipped, robotic vocals, recall the dawn of minimal wave, when electronic music was decidedly icy and proudly mechanical (Smith will soon be collaborating with Suzanne Ciani, a synth music pioneer). “Careen” is warped, warm and wonderful.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s Euclid will be released January 20 on Western Vinyl.
