Writing about the Honeydrips’ song “Oh Stampe, Oh Stella,” Marc Hogan said: “The single is a subdued but sure expansion on the Technicolor tenderness of [the Honeydrips'] debut.” And, indeed, “subdued but sure” is a good shorthand for the record that contains that song: “They Look at Us” is a fuzzed-out bit of jangle-pop that rolls forward steadily on slow-burning momentum, and “Bright” fizzles and fades like sparklers in the night sky. All of it is guided by Mikael Carlsson’s uncanny knack for melody, which he nestles beneath dusky layers of guitars and synths for a final product that is woozy and dreamlike.

In the City will be released February 18 on Luxury.
