Like many of the bands on the always-excellent Chicago label HoZac, Games hang out at the shady corner where punk rock meets power pop. The riffs are two parts bubblegum, one part sand, and the vocals are more sneer than smile. But tune into the chorus, and it’s nothing but valentines: “My life’s been empty all the time, ’til you came to me,” sings Jeremy Thompson (of the late, lamented Busy Signals). He’s the gum-popping greaser in the corner, working up the nerve to ask the girl to dance.
