Take the greasy glory of garage rock and cross-wire it with the resilient melodicisim and indomitable spirit of the best bar band and you’ll end up with something that sounds a lot like the Portland band Divers. “Breathless,” from the forthcoming Hello Hello is a perfectly-executed and masterfully-underplayed anthem: the guitars ring and clang triumphantly, but there’s enough grit in the gears to keep them from sounding strident or swell-chested. Hello Hello is a concept record about a couple of bank robbers driving across North America, and every note of “Breathless” captures that spirit: the thrill of the chase, the exhilaration of a perfectly executed plan and the dirtiness of transgression. It all clicks masterfully, making for the kind of song that burrows itself into your brain without ever feeling like it’s shamelessly tugging at your heart.

Hello Hello will be released February 17 on Party Damage and Rumbletowne Records.
