Sounding like an outtake from some lost ’70s Giallo film, “Distant Voices,” from Contact’s forthcoming debut LP, is marvelous, moody and fully enveloping. In a way, it’s to be expected: the members of Contact are AE Paterra, known for his work with Majeure and Zombi, and Paul Lawler, composer of the scores for unsettling films like Confine and the television series Evil and The Ghosts of the Mary Rose. Fittingly, “Distant Voices” creeps and floats, milky-way-like synths swirling and settling, backbeat thudding slowly, persistently beneath. It’s a gorgeous, expansive number, retro-futurist in its mood and tone, somber and elegiac in execution. A riveting work of synth mystery.
