Chris Staples‘s latest LP American Soft, released in August via Barsuk Records, is just like its title: gentle, acoustic guitar-driven Americana. As he heads out on tour, Staples is offering a bonus track, his take on Built to Spill’s “Center of the Universe,” from the band’s 1999 EP of the same name. Staples strips the impeccable, upbeat original down to acoustic guitar and piano, drawing more attention to Doug Martsch’s lonely lyrics: “I don’t like this air/ But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop breathing it/ Who doesn’t think they’re at/ the center of the universe being it.”
