“Bad Medusa,” the latest single from Cellphone (whose Facebook lists them as hailing from, curiously, Toronto, Ft. Lauderdale and Boston) comes roaring out of the gate, mere seconds passing from the entry of the song’s jackhammering riff to its manic, panicked, rubber-lipped vocals. Another entry into the consistently excellent catalog of Canada’s Telephone Explosion label, the song is a wild-eyed monster, fangs wet, nails sharpened. It’s hard to accurately capture the level of full-on bonkers lunacy that busts out over the course of the song’s five minutes: ramming-speed punk gives way to bad-trip psyched-out guitars before the whole thing ignites in a high-speed thrash-and-burn style raveup worthy of early Metallica. It’s pulse-quickening and day-making.
Cellphone’s Excellent Condition will be out on November 11 on Telephone Explosion.
