If their backstory is to be believed, The Belle Sounds formed when vocalist Noëlle Hampton approached guitarist André Moran at a club in San Francisco and said, “I think I came here to meet you tonight.” A similar sense of mystery and kismet runs through their music. Hampton’s voice recalls Juliana Hatfield at her most emotionally candid, and the group’s music — nervous, sparkling jangle-pop — summons memories of the heyday of the Paisley Underground. “Black Stone” is full of strange, mystic imagery: sleeping ladies, red-tailed hawks, the black stone of the title. It all converges in a song that is both beautiful and beguiling.
