Shellac have finally revealed the release date of their first new album in seven years, Dude Incredible. Due out September 16 through their longtime label Touch & Go, the record was wrapped at guitarist/producer Steve Albini’s infamous Electrical Audio studios over the past couple years and mastered at Abbey Road by Steve Rooke. According to a press release, “There is no comma in Dude Incredible; like Sir Duke or King Friday, for example … Audio quality is paramount, as always, with Shellac. The LP was mastered entirely in the analog domain, using the DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) process. The LPs are being manufactured at RTI in Camarillo, CA, using their HQ-180 system. The pressings are 180 gram audiophile quality.”

Touch & Go also made sure to add that “this record will have no formal promotion. There will be no
advertisements, no press or radio promotion, no e-promotion, no promotional or review copies, no promotional gimmick items, and otherwise no free lunch.”

The trio will be doing some interviews and playing sporadic shows, however, so expect to hear more from the always painfully honest Albini in the months ahead. Why, just last year, he talked about the album in depth with Chicagoist, saying, “Whenever we get our shit together on the production side and get things like artwork, a title, and all that sort of stuff that gradually works itself out together then we end up with a record. We didn’t have a timetable. In the interim between the last album and this album we’ve constantly been working on new material and incorporating it into the live sets. Eventually we had enough of it that we felt like we could record it all. We had a couple of recording sessions and then … time passed. Then we had a couple more recording sessions and some more time passed and we reevaluated everything. We were happy with it so we tried to put it together into an album.”

Albini also said that most of the new material has been played live already, so if you’ve seen one of Shellac random shows in recent years, chances are you know some of these songs…
