Scott O))). The name tells you about all you need to know, but just in case: Scott Walker and Sunn O))) have teamed up on a project for 4AD. The venerable indie label revealed the momentous collaboration between the British-based avant-garde crooner and the Seattle drone-metal fog-pummelers with a cryptic tweet to a website featuring the logo you see above.
“I can confirm that they are working together,” a 4AD rep says via email. “We will have more information to share in the next couple of weeks.” A label spokesperson clarified to The Quietus that “there is a record coming later this year.” Other details are still to be announced.
A prospective album from the collaborators would be Walker’s first since 2012′s mighty, austere (and mighty austere) Bish Bosch. Sunn O))) hasn’t released a full-fledged studio album since 2009′s metal/avant-garde synthesis Monoliths and Dimensions. But the robe-wearing unit, centered around core members Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, hasn’t been shy about collaborations, most recently working with Norway’s Ulver on this year’s atmosphere-weaving Terrestrials after previous team-ups with Nurse With Wound and Boris.
Walker collabos are a rarer get, though the Ohio-born former teen idol of the Walker Brothers fame did lend his characteristic deep baritone to a track on Bat for Lashes’ 2009 Two Suns. Last year, Walker reissued his first five albums as a box set via Universal.
Whatever happens, this earth-shaking meeting of high-minded heavies should have your mid-year top-10 lists quaking like whatever is the opposite of an aftershock.
