Sam Amidon has announced a new album a little more than a year after his last, Bright Sunny South. Due out September 30 through Nonesuch, Lily-O features the banjo-picking singer alongside a couple recurring collaborators (bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Chris Vatalaro) and Amidon’s longtime guitar hero, Bill Frisell. The quartet came together at the Reykjavik studio of producer/Bedroom Community co-founder Valgeir Sigurðsson (Björk, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Feist), who has a long history of working with the Vermont native.

“I knew if I got Bill together with those guys they would get into a deep situation,” Amidon explains in a press release. “I imagined that we would do something weird and fiddle-based, but when we got in there it just felt great to sing the songs I had gathered. Recording took about four days. I’d teach them the basic structure of the song; we’d do a few takes, and move on to a new one. There’s maybe one or two overdubs but otherwise you’re hearing what we played.”

Check out the record’s lead single below, “Walkin’ Boss,” which also happens to be one of the first songs Amidon learned on the banjo.
