The 21-string West African harp known as the kora gives a gorgeous, rippling sound. Even in the percussive Gambian style, there's a flowing grace to the notes. These traditional songs of the musician class, called griots, have a delicacy and an intimate beauty, especially on the airy closer, "Mama Manneh." Suso's fingers bring the music glowingly alive, while his rough voice caresses the words that tell the epic tales of his people. All history should be this entertaining.
