In close conjunction, the words "jazzy" and "electronica" tend to hint that "boring" and "pompous" lurk right around the corner. But this German group does things a little differently &#8212 for one thing, they seem to love jazz for its friskiness as much as its smoky atmosphere, and for another, they appear to love electronica for similar reasons, though you should probably stick the word "squelchiness" in there somewhere as well. Whroooooooooam tries on several styles and does them all well: "Jazz Tip" juggles a lithe piano, gurgling stand-up bass line, and a couple vocal snippets (a male chuckle and a woman crooning, "Get together now") over an insistent, hi-hat-pocked pulse flecked by squishing noises, while "Kippcheri" is a guitar-led, late-night downtempo groove that's airy without being air-headed, and "So Funky" is dubby broken-beat, its Latin-esque conga-buttressed beats shuffling and sliding in nonstop circling patterns. Boring? Pompous? Nein.
