The Balkans are famous for their musicians, but there's also a potent vocal tradition, as this album immediately proves. It's folk music in all its beautiful diversity, from the aching a capella tones of "Polegnala Bela Pshenitza" to the sublime, disorienting microtonal harmonies of "Done Ide Ot Manastir." Deeply rooted, simple on the surface but complex underneath, it's grippingly powerful, even if you don't understand the words; "Zaido Mi Rayo" will move even the hardest heart.
