Verdi: Falstaff

Sir Colin Davis, London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), Edward Elgar
A romantic twist on Verdi’s comic career-capper.

Robust and charismatic, adorable for all his bluster, Michele Pertusi in the title role gives Shakespeare's antihero a romantic as well as comic flair, and Maria Jose Moreno and Bülent Bezdüz make an ardent, fresh-voiced pair of young lovers in this performance of Verdi's last opera, his surprising valedictory to the genre after a career concentrating on tragedies. Sir Colin Davis brings this music dash, sparkle, and warm good humor — and a bit of authentic English-countryside atmosphere in the Act III outdoor scene.
