The starry lineup of performers on this disc of chamber and solo works by Joan Tower (b. 1938) testify to how well she is regarded amongst musician circles: the Tokyo String Quartet, pianist Ursula Oppens, violinist Chee-Yun, violist Paul Neubauer and oboist Richard Woodhams all pay tribute to Tower's talents. As this varied album demonstrates, Tower — herself an active pianist — understands the unique attributes and colors of each instrument she employs, from the hoarse richness of the viola's C string (in "Wild Purple") to the piano's textural range ("No Longer Very Clear").
