Unlike most early music specialists who concentrate their studies on Western Europe, Oleg Timofeyev specializes in music made in Russia. As if that particular degree of focus wasn't enough, Timofeyev plays tunes on this release only by those from Georgia. I do say tunes — and not guitar tunes — because not all of the composers represented here wrote these works solely for the six — or, in the case of much Russian folk music, seven — string. Despite their proximity, though, Georgian folk music bears little trace to the Russian work of the period. Georgians were a notoriously independent segment of Russian culture and you can hear this plainly in things like the delightful "Gnomes March" as well as the slowly unfolding "Chela." A splendid release.
