A primer of Brooklyn rock’s earnest beginnings.

This Arena Rock compilation was released in June of 2001, just as the New York scene was finding its legs. Future middle-to-heavyweights such as the Walkmen, Clem Snide, Mendoza Line, Calla, Ex Models, Les Savy Fav, Rainer Maria, the Boggs, the French Kicks, Mink Lungs, Ida, Interpol and Laura Cantrell contribute tracks to the benefit double-disc, making this an excellent compendium of Brooklyn rock's earnest beginnings. It also paints a misleading picture of the scene — few of these acts have anything in common, and those who did quickly segregated themselves into smaller cohorts. There's also a what-if quality to the compilation: the forgotten Scout, for instance, were touted as New York's commercial sure-thing, and the catchy pop of "It's All Made Up" makes clear why, in a very mid-'90s way, at least. This Is Next Year is not No New York, but it's an impressive collection of what was, wasn't and would be.
