Fresh off an opening slot for Ben Folds, New York songwriter Chris Mills offers plaintive, poignant songs loaded with hope and despair. Mills 'voice is ragged and husky, and it's well suited to these sturdy songs. Opening track "Chris Mills is Living The Dream" blends gallows humor and Neutral Milk Hotel brass for a song builds to a glorious conclusion; "Escape From New York" is frantic and charging, hurtling breathlessly forward until it collapses in a heap. And "Dancing on the Head of a Pin" — the record'seasy highlight — is a slow, tender pirouette, loaded with wistful longing.
