If you didn't know any better, you'd be forgiven for thinking there was something a little funny in the water in New York. Mercury Rev, the Silent League and Hopewell all play a trippy version of pop music that's just a little bit of left-of-center. Hopewell may be the straightest of them all, but that won't stop their light psychedelics from turning you on. In fact, the attention that the group instead pays to simply embellishing the song's main melody pays off handsomely, in the form of niggling pop nuggets like "The Notbirds" and "True Blue." (The latter sounds like The Move fronted by Wayne Coyne, for what it's worth.) But they can't stay away for an entire EP — check out the "Silent Interlude" that isn't so silent for your psych fix, if you find yourself jonesing.
