Even when Emma Burgess'backing band gets loud on “Back Seat Queen,” she still sounds like a singer-songwriter. Her sweetly vulnerable voice gives her away. She's lonely amid the squall, but simultaneously owns it. It's a tour de force, in other words. It's not just any group of sidemen crafting that squall, though — or the other more delicate tracks on Swim. A bevy of legendary sidemen contributed to the project, including Rusty Anderson (guitarist for Paul McCartney), Mike Garson (pianist for David Bowie), Joey Waronker (drummer for Beck), among others. But no matter the roster, this is clearly Burgess 'show. And judging by the results of this record, we'll be hearing many more from her in the future.
